HungerFree rocks ThailandBangkok’s Siam Square witnessed an explosive launch of ActionAid’s HungerFREE campaign on Saturday, June 30th.

Top Thai hip-hop, pop and rock bands joined up-coming student bands playing to 2000 of Bangkok’s youth in the HungerFREE Planet concert.

As well as live music, HungerFREE Planet featured video projections, games and a ‘take action’ booth where concert-goers could send a message to governments to act on hunger.

ActionAid Thailand worked with civil society organisations, youth and media networks to create a huge buzz around the campaign launch.

The event started with a HungerFREE Caravan along the streets of the Siam Square, the central shopping area of Bangkok, culminating in the gig atm Center Point.

Hi Kanjantha, who fought for her right to land for 27 years, spoke about how hunger is created by poor people’s exclusion from natural resources.

During the event, 10 young bands composed a new song to raise awareness of hunger and social issues.

Hong Li, a member of Rotee band said: “I’m so proud that my music can make other people more aware about the social issues. It is a great thing that my song can speak against hunger and for poor people.”

In Asia, a person dies every 11 seconds of hunger.
